AMSET to Host “Feathers, Wings and Earthbound Treasures” Reception January 22.

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas will host an opening reception showcasing “Feathers, Wings and Earthbound Treasures,” a collection of large-scale nature-inspired art created by Houston native, Lana Portner. The opening reception is set for Sunday, January 22, from 2 – 4 p.m

A current Beaumont resident and Beaumont Art League member, Portner’s body of work is an homage to the spiritual and healing power of the natural world.

“I am inspired by the beauty of nature,” she said. “To me, nature is spiritual…I believe that people are intrinsically connected to nature, and I literally express this idea in some of my drawings by combining people with trees.”

Carrying the theme throughout her body of work, Portner draws from her travels and uses a variety of media, including charcoal on paper, acrylic on canvas and magazine collage to express the profundity of nature’s beauty and power.

“Inspiration often comes to me while traveling, or from an image I see in a magazine or television show,” Portner said.

While her creative process can be labor intensive at time, Portner notes that process and final product are satisfying.

“I peruse dozens of magazines to find the colors that I envision, then tear or cut them into pieces and compile the to form the image in my mind…I imagine that I am putting something that is broken back together again. It is very satisfying,” she said.

While the opening reception is a one-day event, the artist’s work will be on view to the public January 19 through March 26 at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, located at 500 Main Street, Beaumont, TX 77701. Food and wine for the reception to be catered by Katherine and Company.

Lana Portner was born in Houston, Texas and moved to Beaumont in 2000. She graduated from the University of Houston with a B.A. in Psychology and several years later began taking drawing classes at Lamar University in Beaumont. Portner is a member of the Beaumont Art League, where she regularly submits work for exhibition. Portner also donates her art to numerous local and international charities.
